Pierre CHAUVIN

Research Director

With a MD (UPMC) and a PhD in epidemiology and public health (University of Bordeaux), Pierre CHAUVIN is a tenured Director of Research at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM). His career began in vaccinology and field epidemiology in developing countries (Sénégal, Côte d’Ivoire, Tadjikistan, Afghanistan). Then he conducted research in public health surveillance in primary care in France at INSERM. Since 1997, he has oriented his research in social epidemiology, first amongst NGOs, then back at INSERM where he created and headed the research group on ‘Social determinants of health and healthcare’ in the research Unit 707 between 2001 and 2013.

In 2014, he has created the research group in social epidemiology (ERES) at the Pierre Louis institute of epidemiology and public health (Inserm – Sorbonne Universités UPMC) in Paris, France. He has headed ERES until 2018
His research interests concern the social inequalities and the social determinants of health and health care utilization in urban area, in the general population and also in different underserved populations. He is the author or the co-editor of 11 books and of more than two hundreds publications in international peer-reviewed journals. His teaching experience has concerned field epidemiology in Western Africa, public health in Eastern Africa and social epidemiology at UPMC.
He has been laureate of the Paris medical school in 1989 and awarded by the ‘Avenir’ programme of INSERM in 2001 and by the medical research programme of the City of Paris in 2005.
