Social and family determinants of psychological difficulties and addictive behaviour in young adults

In industrialized countries, psychiatric disorders (the most frequent being depression, anxiety disorders, and alcohol and drug-related addictions) affect one in four persons and represent 15% of the burden of disease.

Persons belonging to socioeconomically disadvantaged groups are especially vulnerable to psychiatric disorders, but the mecanisms of these social inequalities, which emerge early in life, are yet unknown. Reseach based on TEMPO cohort data, conducted since 2009 among 1103 young adults (22-35 years at the time) who have also been evaluated in 1991 and 1999, and again in 2009, 2011, 2015 and 2018, aims to gain a better understanding of the respective role of socio-economic position in childhood as well as early psychological difficulties with regard to social inequalities in mental health in young adulthood.
