Susana Barbosa

Research fellow

Susana BARBOSA is a post-doctoral researcher in the ESSMA team since September 2024.
She is a computational biologist with expertise in mathematics, bioinformatics, and epidemiology, having transitioned from studying vector-borne diseases to mental health disorders. Her recent work has focused on the immune system’s role in psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD), applying computational tools to analyze birth (EDEN, ELFE) and psychiatric cohort data (FondaMental), and testing anti-inflammatory treatments for SCZ.

As part of the EXPRES project, she is now investigating perinatal mental health (PMH), examining the effects of occupational exposures (OE) on pregnant women. While employment during pregnancy is often viewed as protective, workplace exposure to chemicals, ergonomic risks, and stressors like job strain may increase the risk of depression and anxiety.  Her research examines the associations between prenatal occupational exposures (chemical, biological, ergonomic, physical, and psychological) and PMH, while also evaluating the impact of social inequalities. She also explores potential dysfunctional inflammatory pathways, triggered by OE, that may be key mechanisms underlying the relationship between OE and PMH.
