In France, cannabis is mainly consumed in the form of herb or resin (94%). Even if the level of cannabis use among young people is now decreasing, the proportion of problematic users is increasing.
Moreover, while experimentation and occasional use of cannabis are widespread among the general population, regular and problematic use is more likely to be observed among people with lower socioeconomic status and lower levels of education. One of the mechanisms by which socioeconomic status might be associated with higher cannabis use could be greater accessibility, as illegal cannabis sales tend to be concentrated in disadvantaged neighborhoods. Moreover, the illicit cannabis market is expanding rapidly in France, and the mobilization of law enforcement, which does not prevent the development of trafficking, and the penalties incurred by consumers are not particularly dissuasive.
In this context, the main objective of the EFAMAC project (Evolution and Factors Associated with the Different Modes of Cannabis Supply) is to study the evolution of the cannabis sale modes in France, based on an investigation of the purchase practices of users, and the characteristics associated with various modes of supply. The objective is to determine supply profiles, testing the role of individual socioeconomic position and the residential context of cannabis sales. To meet these objectives, two complementary approaches will be used. Firstly, we will use data from a survey carried out by the OFDT on the general French population of 17 year olds : ESCAPAD. Secondly, a qualitative study will be carried out among 50 cannabis users aged 18-35, from various social backgrounds, but also among dealers and law enforcement officers, in order to better understand the modes of cannabis supply, their evolution over time and the motivations which explain the strategies to which people resort.
