Dans les pays industrialisés les troubles mentaux (dont les plus fréquents sont la dépression, les troubles anxieux, et les troubles liés à l’alcool ou aux drogues) touchent une personne sur quatre et représentent 15% de la morbidité totale (burden of disease). Les personnes issues de groupes sociaux défavorisés sont particulièrement vulnérables aux troubles psychiatriques, mais les mécanismes de ces inégalités sociales, qui apparaissent très tôt au cours de la vie, sont encore mal connus. Les recherches basées sur les données de la cohorte TEMPO, une étude menée depuis 2009 auprès de 1103 jeunes adultes (22-35 ans) qui ont une première fois été suivis en 1991 et 1999, puis de nouveau en 2009, 2011, 2015 et 2018, visent à mieux comprendre le rôle respectif du milieu social d’origine et des difficultés psychologiques précoces vis-à-vis des inégalités sociales de santé mentale au début de la vie adulte.
