Jihye KIM

PhD student

Jihye KIM is a PhD student in epidemiology within the ESSMA team, supervised by Judith van der Waerden and co-supervised by Florence Bodeau-Livinec (UMR 261 MERIT, IRD). Her doctoral research, titled « Maternal mental health, child immune biomarkers and child neurodevelopment in Benin and Mozambique », investigates the biological embedding of chronic maternal psychological distress in offspring using data from the prospective MiPPAD birth cohorts.

Bridging social and life-course epidemiology, psychoneuroimmunology, and child neurodevelopment, her project examines how longitudinal maternal mental health trajectories relate to adolescent systemic immune profiles at age 14 and subsequent neurodevelopmental outcomes at age 16. It also evaluates the compounding roles of endemic malaria and pediatric malnutrition in this psycho-biological pathway. Ultimately, this research aims to provide empirical evidence to inform integrated, multi-sectoral global health policies in sub-Saharan Africa that simultaneously support maternal mental well-being and the physical and mental development of the offspring.

Jihye holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs with a Minor in Psychology from Northeastern University and a Master of Public Health from the EHESP School of Public Health. She also brings public health field experience from Rwanda with KOICA.
